Tessa Van Dender: AniCura Veterinary Center Malpertuus in Destelbergen

Hi, I’m Tessa Van Dender, a 26-year-old veterinarian from Belgium. I graduated from the University of Ghent in 2022 and started working at AniCura DAC Malpertuus in Heusden shortly after. Becoming a veterinarian has been my dream since I was four years old, inspired by TV shows about veterinarians saving animals. That little girl inside of me still inspires me every day to give my best and continue learning, to help as many pets as possible.

When I’m not at the clinic, I love exploring the world with my boyfriend, indulging my love of travel, and discovering new places and cultures. Back home, I spend time with my family, friends, and pets – or focus on hobbies like cheerleading and horseback riding, which help me recharge and stay balanced in a busy life.

Discovering structure amidst chaos

When I first heard about the AniCura Veterinary Graduate Programme, I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information I wanted to learn as a new vet. The programme arrived at the perfect time, bringing structure to my learning and helping me focus on the areas that mattered most.

Overcoming challenges

One of the most daunting parts of starting my career was the responsibility that comes with being a veterinarian. The programme’s emphasis on mental health and self-leadership was a game-changer, teaching me to balance the emotional demands of the job while staying confident in my decisions.

The programme also provided invaluable knowledge in handling complex cases. A highlight for me was the focus on first-line care and developing the skills to navigate more advanced cases – something I use daily in my clinic.

Connections across Europe

One of the most rewarding aspects of the programme was meeting fellow graduates from across Europe. Sharing experiences over dinners and workshops created a sense of community that I’ll carry with me throughout my career.

The road ahead

My dream is to specialize in surgery, and AniCura offers countless opportunities for continued learning and development. The support and resources within the AniCura network are unmatched, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.

To new veterinarians, I would say: take your time. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but with patience and persistence, you’ll achieve your goals. The AniCura Veterinary Graduate Programme has been a cornerstone of my career, and I’m grateful for everything it has given me.
